The Lake's Lighthouses October 20, 2003 WPTZ NEWS CHANNEL 5
Lake Champlain lighthouse beacons are coming back on-line, one at a time. Private landowners, the Coast Guard, municipalities, historic organizations, and the public are working together to insure that the beacons shine brightly again. To date, Windmill Point Lighthouse in Alburg, the Isle LaMotte Lighthouse, Cumberland Head Lighthouse in Plattsburgh, and the Split Rock Lighthouse have all been relit. The U.S. Coast Guard now plans to relight the Valcour Island Lighthouse, also known as the Bluff Point Lighthouse next spring. This past summer, lighthouse replicas were also been built and relit on Burlington, Vermont's breakwater.
The Lake Champlain Basin Program is pleased to have supported Cumberland Head Tommorrow's Lake Champlain Lighthouses booklet, which is available at many stores along the New York and Vermont shoreline. Sid Couchey, a Plattsburgh area artist who also drew Richie Rich and Little Lu Lu cartoons, has also created a poster, Lighthouses of Lake Champlain, showing the locations of all the Lake Champlain lighthouses. Recently a group of lighthouse enthusiasts visited the Windmill Point and Isle LaMotte Lighthouses, as well as the Colchester Reef Lighthouse which was relocated to Shelburne Museum. The tourists were part of the "Flying Santa" organization that helps deliver holiday gifts to lighthouse keepers in remote locations. Each year, representatives visit lighthouses from around the United States. Some of their travel expenses go into a fund to support the Flying Santa program. Lake Champlain lighthouses were chosen as sites to visit this year. www.flyingsanta.org
